Building To Last, Building Together

Reflections Devotional from All Nations Church Leicester
Ephesians 2:19-22 (NIV)
19 Consequently, you are no longer foreigners and strangers, but fellow citizens with God’s people and also members of his household, 20 built on the foundation of the apostles and prophets, with Christ Jesus himself as the chief cornerstone. 21 In him the whole building is joined together and rises to become a holy temple in the Lord. 22 And in him you too are being built together to become a dwelling in which God lives by his Spirit.

It’s all about Him! Jesus – HE is the CORNERSTONE and the CAPSTONE of the building. Everything begins in Him and finds its fulfillment in Him. It’s ‘in him’ that we all fit together and are being built together into a holy temple for His glory.

NOTICE THE ‘TOGETHER’ TERMINOLOGY  – ‘JOINED TOGETHER’ AND ‘BUILT TOGETHER’.

Two essential components of any building which is BUILT TO LAST are the FOUNDATIONS and the CEMENT.

1) FOUNDATIONS

The only legitimate foundation is CHRIST and a true apostles’ teaching is always CHRIST CENTRED and KINGDOM FOCUSED.

IT WILL BE ABOUT CHRIST EXALTED AND A WORLD TRANSFORMED!

Any personal agendas have to give way to God’s agenda for His Son. We may all have our preferences according to the grace on our lives but it is the apostolic grace that gives us the foundation and blueprint for the building. The other ministries are specialists in the house. The apostle has the architects plan for how the house is to be built, which is why the early church DEVOTED THEMSELVES TO THE APOSTLES TEACHING. ACTS 2:42.

2) CEMENT

THE CEMENT IS RELATIONSHIP!

UNITY and RELATIONSHIP are the GLUE which holds it all together. Faulty cement is thought to be the possible cause of the cause of the Genoa bridge collapse, with devastating consequences for both lives and communication links.

Note that in our passage, the building is JOINED together and BUILT together!

This is no random pile of stones, but a building with a design and purpose.

The CEMENT is our relationship with THE LORD and EACH OTHER.

This calls for a decision and investment on our part.

I am called to bless all people, but I am called to build with those whom God has placed me alongside in time and space.

In order to build with you, I need to CONNECT with you!

In order to build something to last, I need to COMMIT to you!

In order for the building to be sustained and grow, I need to CONTRIBUTE to it!

LET’S GIVE OURSELVES WHOLEHEARTEDLY TO BUILD IN SUCH UNITY AND PURPOSE THAT GOD HAS TO COMMAND A BLESSING SO GREAT THAT NOTHING AND NO-ONE CAN WITHSTAND IT!!!
